Dear Debbie, on the sixth of May
another year has swung my way;
your birthday rises, soft and clear,
the same as every passing year.

Though time keeps marching, bold and fast,
my love stays anchored to the past —
your laugh, your light, your shining face,
no turning world can take your place.

So, I breathe “Happy Birthday,” true,
into the sky you wandered through,
and hope the wind, in drifting blue,
still carries all my love to you.

Some people like to celebrate nice things from year to year.
This year I'll celebrate my sister's death with tears.
Another year has passed since she left my side.
The gaping wound still vast as we approach another birthday.
