John was an incredibly kind and considered man. I am sure that there are a huge number of folks whose lives have been altered for the better by their fortune of knowing John.
For my part, I think it's safe to say my life was never the same after meeting him and the path it has taken me has given me immeasurable joy over the years. I cannot thank him enough for that.
He may not go to sea again, but in 30 years of working afloat I have never met anyone more naturally at home with wind and wave. The sea never leaves some souls. It is part and parcel of his whole energy.
